TIPS ON USING INTERPRETERS FOR THE DEAF/HH

1.  If contractors are hired, do not keep the Interpreter waiting; you are paying them by the hour.

2.  Allow the Interpreter to stand or sit slightly behind you to one side. This allows the deaf consumer    to see both you and the Interpreter simultaneously.

3. Articulate clearly and audibly, but do not exaggerate lip movements. Shouting does not help either.

4. Speak directly to the deaf consumer, not to the Interpreter, and do not engage in side
   conversations with the Interpreter.

5. Remember that everything you say will be interpreted just as everything the deaf consumer says
   will be interpreted.

6. If you miss something that has been spoken or misunderstand a remark, do not ask the
Interpreter to repeat, ask the deaf consumer to repeat the remark.

7. Do not allow the Interpreter to interject personal opinions.

8. Do not allow a coworker who has taken sign language classes to interpret for the deaf consumer.

9. Do not use family members or friends to interpret. The deaf consumer has a legal right to a
   professionally qualified Interpreter.

10. Do not ask the Interpreter to help a deaf consumer complete forms. The Interpreter interprets the
questions, but does not personally answer them.
